Responsive Feeding Therapy in Early Intervention (Age 0-3):
Course Description:
Early Interventionists play a vital role in supporting children’s development — and central to that is building feeding foundations that are responsive, respectful, and rooted in relationship. This course introduces Responsive Feeding Therapy in Early Intervention, exploring how responsive feeding principles not only align with EI values but also offer a big-picture perspective that allows for the best and most individualized care for pediatric feeding differences.
Responsive Feeding Therapy acknowledges that eating is more than what and how much a child eats. It emphasizes how families connect around food and the role their routines and natural environments can play in a child's feeding development. In this approach, therapists help families develop competence and ease around feeding so that children can experience felt safety at mealtimes, recognize hunger and fullness cues along with other drives to eat, and participate actively and autonomously in feeding. A more responsive and holistic approach not only helps children and families feel and function better when they are eating, but also supports skill development in a more meaningful and lasting way — one that is protective of the child's relationship with food and their body well into the future.
Participants in this course will see how responsive feeding principles can make therapy more impactful and keep the family at the center of care. By engaging in Responsive Feeding Therapy in early intervention, you will be better prepared to support positive change in a child's feeding skills while strengthening the entire family.
